Overview

On this spectacular self-drive vacation, spend 13 days visiting Namibia’s unique and interesting landscapes. Beautiful desert and dune vistas, ancient rock art, the spectacular Atlantic coast, and a big game safari are all part of the agenda.

Start and conclude your tour in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital city. You begin with a visit to the Waterberg Plateau and Okonjima, which are home to the Africat Foundation and up-close experiences with Africa’s huge animals. Then, continue the big game theme with game drives in Namibia’s premier conservation region, Etosha National Park.

Following that is the physically unusual Damaraland region, where you can see desert animals and a vast collection of San Bushman rock art before heading to the Atlantic coast and the gorgeous town of Swakopmund.

Before continuing your desert excursion into the Sossusvlei region, engage in exciting adventure activities on the adjacent dune fields. You may conclude your vacation here by staying deep within immense dune fields that feature some of the world’s tallest sand dunes; you’ll have the opportunity to climb them as well as tour the NamibRand Nature Reserve in search of ingeniously adapted desert species.

Day 1: Begin your Namibian adventure | 1 Night

WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA Your Namibian trip begins today as you fly into Windhoek International Airport and pick up your rental vehicle before proceeding to the AM Weinberg Boutique Hotel, the ideal place to spend the night. Relax in the outdoor pool, or visit the world-class spa for a session in the thermal spring-fed floating pool, steam room, or Middle Eastern Rasul mud chamber. Am Weinberg's in-house cuisine produces seasonal dishes made up of the freshest food, which are offered in the Sky Lounge, the Library Lounge, and the Wine Lounge.

Day 2: Visit the home of the Big Cats | 1 Night

After finishing your trip with a final substantial breakfast at Kulala Desert Lodge, you will be driven back to Windhoek International Airport. You will be able to connect to your continuing travel plans from here.

Days 3-5: Explore Etosha National Park | 2 Nights

ETOSHA, NAMIBIA Drive north from Windhoek to the Omboroko Mountains on the Waterberg Plateau, a stunning skyscraping chunk of red sandstone. Arrive to Okonjima Plains Camp, a luxurious safari camp in the middle of this gorgeous region known for its big cat and large carnivore conservation projects.Okonjima is home to the Africat Foundation, an institution committed to the conservation of Namibia's lion, leopard, and cheetah populations. Visit the foundation to learn about the important work they are doing to rehabilitate wounded animals and protect their natural habitats. Set out on guided and self-directed walking routes to discover these nimble creatures' home and get a closer look at this rough yet beautiful environment. Relax at the lodge throughout the day by having a refreshing dip in the quiet pool or strolling around the grounds. This is also an excellent opportunity to see birds, many of which are peculiar to the area.

Days 6-7: Discover ancient rock art in Damaraland | 2 Nights

DAMARALAND, NAMIBIA Today, you'll travel north to the world-famous Etosha National Park, a stunning wilderness region with an enticing combination of savannah and desert animals, a diversified wildlife, and a noticeable elephant population. Arrive to The Mushara Outpost, a luxurious safari camp in a dry riverbed near the park's boundary. Enjoy morning, afternoon, and early evening game drives, as well as guided safari walks and close-up views of large game and diverse bird species, in the reserve. The tents at the camp have glass fronts, allowing you to enjoy Namibia's brilliant sunrises and magnificent night sky. You may also visit the Okaukuejo section of Etosha, which is known for its wealth of wildlife and regular sightings of elephant, black rhino, lion, and cheetah. One of the simplest ways to see wildlife is to park near a waterhole and let the drama come to you.Following a night at The Mushara Outpost, you will spend another night near this remarkable national park at Etosha Safari Lodge.

Days 8-9: Enjoy adventure at Swakopmund | 1 Night

SWAKOPMUND, NAMIBIA After a leisurely breakfast, depart Ethosa Safari Lodge for your self-drive adventure to Damaraland, a semi-arid yet breathtakingly beautiful region of Namibia. Arrive to Mowani Mountain Camp, which is perched high up amid giant red granite boulders in the heart of Namibia's Damaraland, home to wide, enchanting views and an unexpected abundance of wildlife. Spend some time settling into your very comfortable tent before venturing out to explore the magnificent San Bushman rock art at Twyfelfontein and marvel at these ancient works of art. In the late afternoon, go on a lovely nature drive to further explore this mountainous region before returning to the camp's spectacular vantage point to enjoy a drink while watching the sunset over one of Namibia's most stunning locales.

Day 9: Travel to the Namib Desert | 3 Nights

SOSSUSVLEI, NAMIBIA Today, you'll experience a very different side of Namibia as you travel west to the coast and Swakopmund, a popular coastal resort sandwiched between desert dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy the friendly atmosphere of this small, colonial-era town as you tour stores, local jewellery booths, and German-style cafés, maybe stopping at one of the pubs for an evening drink before returning to Swakopmund Guesthouse. Although the town may appear peaceful at first glance, it provides a broad choice of interesting desert excursions. Climb towering dunes, try quad riding, dune boarding, or even skydiving in a desert setting; on the other side, a boat trip along the gorgeous coastline will give you an insight into the abundant marine life of this cold but fruitful ocean.

Days 10-11: See the desert elephants

Today, depart Swakopmund for the famed Namib-Naukluft National Park, a magnificent wildlife reserve in the middle of the immense Namib Desert. Arrive to the quirky and opulent Kulala Desert Lodge, which is nestled in stunning environment. Settle in before embarking on a guided nature walk or a trip to the world-famous Sossusvlei Dunes, which are believed to be the tallest sand dunes in the world.

Day 12: Farewell Namibia

Today you can drive to the NamibRand Nature Reserve, situated south of Sossusvlei and boasting some of the most striking scenery in Namibia, which includes dunes, grassy plains and mountain passes. Be on the lookout for desert-adapted animals like elephants, oryx and, if you are very lucky, even lions: there is more life here than you think and you will learn about how wildlife has evolved to adapt to these harsh circumstances.
