Namibia Sossusvlei, Damaraland & Etosha Self-Drive – “The Best of Namibia”

per person

Overview

On this 15-day self-drive journey, travel throughout Namibia’s wide-open landscapes and vast skies in pursuit of the country’s most breathtaking sites and exhilarating outdoor experiences. The agenda is packed with thrilling activities, making it suitable for young-at-heart couples, small groups, and families with older children. You will visit remarkable lodges that provide comfortable and modest lodging as well as wonderful safari adventures in your 4×4 rental car.

After landing at Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek and spending the night there, your journey will begin. After a good night’s sleep, continue south into the Namib Desert, where wide grasslands and craggy mountains give way to the immense red dunes of Sossusvlei. Spend two days exploring this unique desert habitat before heading north to Swakopmund, a beach resort where the plentiful Atlantic Ocean contrasts with towering sand dunes and modest old buildings.

In Damaraland, look for highly adapted species such as the uncommon desert elephant, and wonder at Twyfelfontein’s Stone Age rock etchings. No African experience is complete without a traditional big game safari, and a visit to both the eastern and western areas of Etosha National Park, Namibia’s flagship wildlife reserve, will more than suffice. Your final stop before returning to Windhoek is Okonjima Nature Reserve, where you can learn more about the AfriCat Foundation’s work to safeguard Namibia’s leopards and cheetahs.

Days 2-4: The Red Dunes of Sossusvlei | 3 Nights

SOSSUSVLEI, NAMIBIA Head south in the morning for Sossusvlei Lodge, a luxurious desert paradise in southern Namibia located just outside Namib-Nauklaft National Park. The resort is conveniently located between Sossusvlei and the Sesriem Canyon. Enjoy guided or self-drive trips into the park, float over the awe-inspiring environment in a hot-air balloon, or fly over the undulating ochre-colored dunes in a thrilling light aircraft ride. Families can enjoy eco-friendly quad biking (ATVs), guided nature hikes, and archery, while couples will enjoy romantic dinners in the wilderness and sundowner excursions.

Days 5-6: Sand & sea at Swakopmund | 2 Nights

SWAKOPMUND, NAMIBIA Travel north-east to the seaside town of Swakopmund, a charming community sandwiched between the cool waves of the Atlantic Ocean and the scorching sands of the Namib Desert. The city goes back to late-nineteenth-century German colonial colonisation, and its original Bavarian-inspired architecture lends considerable appeal to the town's interesting natural surroundings. Arrive to the Swakopmund Guesthouse in the late afternoon or early evening, in time for a sunset stroll along the beach. The next day is free to explore and play: select from water activities, sand surfing, quad riding, daring off-road paths, dolphin and seal safaris, and, depending on the time of year, a genuine German-style Oktober beer fest!

Days 7-8: The dreamy landscapes of Damaraland | 2 Nights

DAMARALAND, NAMIBIA The second stage of your journey takes you north along the stunning Atlantic coast and then inland to the golden plains of Damaraland. Camp Kipwe, an authentic eco-lodge where you can experience guided drives in search of desert elephants, nature walks and history excursions, night drives, and magnificent stargazing, is your sumptuous base in this region where time seems to have stood still. The lodge sits in the Twyfelfontein region, which is well known for its magnificent rock art, which includes at least 5000 engravings of animals, humans, and geometrics, some of which date back thousands of years to the Stone Age.

Days 9-10: Safari at Etosha National Park | 2 Nights

ETOSHA, NAMIBIA From Damaraland, continue north-west to Etosha Safari Lodge. This region offers good year-round game viewing of elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest as well as the rare Damara dik-dik. Your daily schedule includes morning and afternoon game drives into Etosha.
6

Days 11-12: Cross vast Etosha Pan | 2 Nights

Travel to the eastern portion of Etosha, passing the edge of the expansive Etosha Pan as you head toward the Onguma Tree-top Lodge. Here your discovery of the park continues and, with only four suites at the lodge, you are guaranteed a unique, intimate and personalised safari experience. Onguma is set on a private reserve and activities available include wildlife and rhino tracking, guided or self-drive game drives, nature walks and night drives.
7

Days 13-14: Big cats in Waterberg | 2 Nights

Bidding farewell to Etosha, you will begin moving south back towards Windhoek, stopping for your last adventure near Namibia’s Waterberg Plateau Park in Kunene. Enjoy two nights at the cosy Okonjima Plains Camp, spending your days hiking through the mountains, bird watching and learning about the conservation of Namibia’s big cats. The AfriCat Foundation is what Kunene is best known for and a visit to the centre is an opportunity to track rehabilitated predators on foot or on a game drive, and learn about the research and rehabilitation of cats such as leopards and cheetahs.

Day 15: Return to Windhoek

Make your way back to the capital city of Windhoek where your self-drive journey through awe-inspiring and unforgettable Namibia comes to its end. At the airport you will return your 4x4 and proceed to check-in for your return flight home.
