Overview

Wake up to the call of the wild on this small and genuine journey across Kenya and Tanzania, where no luxury or service is sacrificed. After a warm welcome at Arusha Coffee Lodge, you will depart for the warm and welcoming ambiance of Gibb’s Farm, tucked against the wooded hills of the spectacular Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This thriving farm is perfectly situated for exploring the nearby wildlife regions, such as the Ngorongoro Crater, which provides the simplest and most rewarding Big 5 viewing in East Africa. It is not uncommon to encounter elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions, and buffalo on a single game drive in the Crater, which has a fertile bottom nourished by rich minerals left behind from a volcanic explosion millions of years ago.

The Ubuntu Migration Camp, which follows the migratory plains game of millions of wildebeest and a scattering of antelope and zebra across the Serengeti, is your next stop. At this semi-permanent safari camp, you can expect to get the most realistic Great Migration experience.

Then you answer the call of the Masai Mara and make your way to Rekero Camp, your last destination. Your seclusion is paramount, yet the calming and knowledgable presence of some of the Mara’s greatest guides is never far away. A cultural tour is on your ‘must-do’ list if you want to understand more about the Maasai way of life. Spend the rest of your day on your terrace, watching the game come to drink at the Talek River.

Day 1: Coffee Farming in Arusha | 1 Night

ARUSHA, TANZANIA With Mount Meru in the background, emerald shrubs studded with scarlet beans surrounding you, and the fragrance of coffee in the air, the Arusha Coffee Lodge is a great place to start your East African adventure. Your first night on safari is spent in a comfortable Plantation Room located deep within the estate. Each room is well decorated and has a beautiful log fire to keep the nighttime chill at bay. The resort is located on the outskirts of Arusha, the closest town to all of Tanzania's northern wildlife parks. Visit the Tanzanite Museum or the Maasai Market while you're here, or take a coffee farm tour. Make time for a soothing spa treatment before embarking on your vacation.

Days 2-4: Experience the Ngorongoro Crater | 2 Nights

NGORONGORO CRATER, TANZANIA En route to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, pass via Lake Manyara National Park. Lake Manyara is famous for its diverse wildlife and tree-climbing lion population (they crawl into the branches to avoid the heat, and multiple members of a single pride can be seen in the same tree at the same time). The magnificent Gibb's Farm will be your home for the next two nights, nestled against the wooded slopes of the Big 5-rich Ngorongoro Crater - the world's largest complete and unfilled volcanic crater. Enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of the old farmhouse and your delightful room, which is located in the centre of a functioning coffee plantation and dairy farm. Enjoy healthful, home-cooked meals made with garden-fresh veggies and farm-fresh organic fruit. Relax with a range of therapies at the African Living Spa, which uses traditional Maasai healing practises. Guided tours on the rim of the renowned Crater and thrilling game drives down into the caldera are available. The environment is breathtaking, and the Ngorongoro Crater is home to over 30 000 animals that are sheltered by the caldera and fed by the Crater's springs and abundant pasture. It is fairly uncommon to witness all five of the Big 5 in a single day.

Days 4-7: Explore the Serengeti | 3 Nights

SERENGETI, TANZANIA Time passes by, and it is time for you to relocate to the Serengeti, where the traditional Ubuntu Mobile Camp awaits you. It maintains comfort in mind while providing the sensation of raw wilderness and true safari. Ubuntu Camp follows the Great Wildebeest Migration, always providing the best game viewing opportunities: from May to July, it is in the Western Corridor between the Nyakoroma Hills and the Serengeti border; from July to October, it moves to the northern Serengeti; and from December to March, it is in the Ngorongoro Conservancy Area. Safari staples like fire-heated bucket showers are available in all eight tents. Bathrooms are en-suite, and with 20 metres (66 feet) between tents, you have privacy while keeping the obstacles between you and the nature to a minimum. You have your own vehicle and guide, who spends 11 months of the year with the herds and shares this intimate knowledge of their habits with you. Game drives are popular at Ubuntu Mobile Camp, but during the summer months, the best alternative is a guided walking safari, which may take an hour or half a day (depending on your health and preferences) and occasionally puts you up close to elephant, giraffe, buffalo, or even a distant lion.

Days 7-10: Culture in the Mara | 3 Nights

MASAI MARA, KENYA Rekero Camp, located near the junction of the Mara and Talek rivers in one of the most game-rich sections of the Masai Mara, is a deceptively basic eco-camp that is well placed for the annual Wildebeest Migration and is your next stop. This mobile camp is only open from June to October, then from December to March. There are nine roomy tents, each with its own en-suite bathroom and shower. Each tent also includes a terrace with a daybed where you can relax after a morning or afternoon of adrenaline-pumping game viewing. Each has its own butler to attend to your every need. Rekero provides an in-depth and authentic Mara experience, and its guides generously share their knowledge. Visit a nearby hamlet or go on a cultural trip to discover more about the ancient Maasai warriors who have long walked this country. Birding, wildlife drives, guided hikes, and picnics are also available, as is hot-air ballooning. You return to Arusha at the end of your East African adventure to make your way home.
