VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, RWANDA After a leisurely breakfast, you will begin the 3-hour road drive to the Volcanoes Virunga Lodge, which is located at the foot of the spectacular Virunga Volcanos. The afternoon is yours to explore the property, visit the grave of legendary gorilla activist Dian Fossey, or simply gaze out the quiet gardens at the beautiful volcano, lake, and forest landscapes. Your second day will begin with a journey to the Kinigi area for a full-day hike in the Volcanoes National Park in search of endangered mountain gorillas. The park protects about 300 of these critically endangered monkeys, and the family groupings you'll be following are habituated (or adapted) to human presence. Travelling north through deep jungle and climbing to the base of the Virunga Volcanos, where the groups are located, may be difficult work in the damp, muddy, and humid circumstances. If you find them, you will be rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime sighting of these lovely creatures interacting, playing, eating, grooming, and going about their everyday lives in their natural habitat. Choose from a variety of optional activities offered at the resort, such as guided hikes through the park to look for golden monkeys and other beautiful rainforest dwellers, or a trek to the top of the volcano. Specialised birding safaris, as well as historical trips and cultural visits to local communities, may be organised. There are lots of comfortable places to sit and enjoy the stunning environment, and in the evenings there is live music and entertainment around the campfire.
