Overview

Chief’s Island in the Mombo concession of the Moremi Game Reserve is the largest of the numerous islands dotted along the winding waterways of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. The ‘chief’ in issue was Moremi, who a century or more ago presided over this prey-rich region of the Delta. The tour will conclude after seven days in Botswana at his historic home base.

Chobe National Park, where you may spot elephants on a 9-seater game drive vehicle or on a boat excursion along the Chobe River, is the first stop on your trip. A trip to Chobe is not complete without witnessing a matriarchal herd crossing the lake and covering themselves in mud.

You’ll spend the middle of your trip in Moremi, a verdant wildlife paradise where you’re likely to see leopards, lions, and hyenas. If you just have a short amount of time to visit Botswana but still want to explore the country’s top attractions, this is the tour for you. Depending on your other commitments, you can start and conclude this journey in either Kasane or Maun.

Days 1–3: Chobe's Doorstep | 2 Nights

CHOBE, BOTSWANA, NATIONAL PARK You'll be picked up in Kasane or Maun and driven to Chobe Bush Lodge, which is located just 150 metres from the Chobe River and features rooms on the lodge's upper floors with breathtaking views of the river below. From your balcony, you can keep an eye out for African fish eagles, hippos, and elephants. During your stay of two days, you will go on game drives, boat cruises, and birding excursions while keeping an eye out for red lechwe, sable antelope, African wild dogs, and apex predators like lion and leopard. The lodge also has modern conveniences like air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a cocktail bar, babysitters and a swimming pool, making it a great place for families with young children to stay. Dusk is a great time to relax with an iced drink on one of the high observation decks and take in the breathtaking views over Chobe; if you listen closely, you may even be able to hear lions calling to one another.

Days 3-5 in Moremi | 2 Nights

BOTSWANA; OKAVANGO DELTA After two days of acclimatisation in Chobe, you'll be prepared to go to the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta on day three. Pom Pom Camp is a classic safari resort with big tents and thoughtful touches like a romantic outdoor Jacuzzi in the honeymoon tent that looks out over the Delta. You and your guide will rise before sunrise to discover the beautiful leopards that call Moremi home as they return to the safety of the woods for the day. Pom Pom's night drives and off-roading privileges are key draws for visitors since it's possible to safely shoot down both predators and prey if they stray off the main dirt road.

Days 5-7: Life on the Island | 2 Nights

BOTSWANA; OKAVANGO DELTA Spend your last two nights of your Botswana vacation in tranquilly on Chief's Island in the Delta. Chief Moremi's former residence, and the largest of the Okavango's several islands, is renowned for its excellent game and abundant birds. Gunn's Camp, modelled like classic safari camps, will be your home for the duration of your stay. Only six en suite tents make up Gunn's Camp, which is made entirely of thatch and timber and features large observation terraces and wooden paths. You'll spend your days being peacefully poled around in a mokoro, gazing through binoculars at birds like lilac-breasted rollers and carmine bee-eaters, and snapping photos of the breathtaking sunsets. On day seven, you'll have your last game drive before heading back to Kasane or Maun for the next phase of your tour and saying 'Tsamaya sentle' to the great personnel at Gunn's Camp.
