This fantastic 16-day self-drive journey covers the main sights along South Africa’s southern coast, beginning with the bustling café culture of Cape Town and ending in Franschhoek, the culinary centre of the Cape Winelands. Your journey continues down the Garden Route’s postcard-perfect coastline before concluding with malaria-free Big 5 wildlife viewing in a private reserve.

Your vacation begins with a four-night stay at the Cape Grace, a hotel in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront that serves as an ideal base for exploring the city. There is so much to see and do in Cape Town, from climbing Table Mountain to seeing the endangered African penguins at Boulders Beach and sipping drinks on Camps Bay’s sunset strip.

The lovely little village of Franschhoek, the gastronomic centre of the Cape Winelands, is your next destination. Spend three nights at the world famous The Tasting Room restaurant in Le Quartier Francais. Spend three days in the sun wine sampling and good dining.

The Garden Route, home to indigenous forests, world-class polo, and some of the world’s greatest shore- and boat-based whale viewing (July to October), kicks your journey into high gear. You travel to your last destination, Kwandwe Private Reserve in the Eastern Cape, after enjoying in The Plettenberg Hotel’s rejuvenating spa treatments. This rough Big 5 reserve is the ideal grand finale to a fantastic self-drive holiday.

Day 1-4: Welcome to the Mother City | 4 Nights

CAPE TOWN, V&A WATERFRONT, SOUTH AFRICA You will be met at Cape Town International Airport and transported to the V&A Waterfront, where you will check into your four-night stay at the Cape Grace. This opulent but welcoming hotel is excellently situated for seeing Cape Town's most popular attractions. After a full night's sleep, your rental car will be brought to Cape Grace, ready for you to start exploring. Take the cable car up Table Mountain or a boat from the V&A Waterfront to the famous Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Soak up the sun in one of Clifton Beach's protected nooks or drink sundowners at a Camps Bay cocktail bar. Explore the shopping hotspot just outside your door, or meander through the city's street cafés and markets. Explore the majestic beauty of Cape Point and its native chacma baboons, or bring a picnic to the lush grounds of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens - there is so much to do and see in and around this city!

Days 5-7: Africa’s Gourmet Capital | 3 Nights

CAPE WINELANDS, FRANSCHHOEK Your next stop is Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands, about an hour's drive from Cape Town, past fruit orchards and vineyards, and over spectacular mountain passes that whisk you through breathtaking natural splendour. Franschhoek is South Africa's culinary centre, with award-winning restaurants and cafés along the streets that are best explored on foot. Its crown gem is The Tasting Room, which is housed in the famed boutique hotel, Le Quartier Français, where you will be staying for three nights. The neighbouring vineyards are surprisingly accessible, with their 300-year-old winemaking heritage elegantly mixing the Old World with the New. Indulge in leisurely wine tastings and light lunches under old oak trees, or explore into cellars deep into hillsides for ideal interpretations of the Cape's terroir. Wear comfortable shoes on day 7 for a full-day guided tour of some of the area's top family-friendly sights and activities. Meet eagles and other raptors at Spier, where you will also have wine tasting as the kids drink grape juice and learn more about the important role bugs play in the ecology. You'll also see a glass blower, taste goat's milk cheese (and meet the goats! ), and try some local chocolate, all while spending time in the sun at thrilling playgrounds.

Days 8-11: The Garden Route: a natural beauty | 4 Nights

GARDEN ROUTE, , SOUTH AFRICA You leave the Winelands and head up the Garden Route, weaving your way past white-sand beaches, tranquil lagoons, and attractive seaside villages. The Plettenberg Hotel, a five-star refuge on a rocky promontory in Plettenberg Bay, will be your home for the next four nights. Choose from a variety of treatments at the hotel's Fresh Wellness Spa, peruse a selected assortment of things by recognised South African designers at the beautiful assortment Boutique, or simply spend your days poolside while admiring the Indian Ocean. Between July and October, take a boat journey to observe southern right whales frolicking along this pristine coastline. Explore the famed Tsitsikamma Forest canopy, try sea kayaking, or put your abilities to the test on a championship golf course.

Days 12-15: Big 5 at Kwandwe Private Reserve | 4 Nights

EASTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA Your journey takes you to the Eastern Cape and the Kwandwe Fort House for the final four nights of your vacation. Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is one of Southern Africa's few malaria-free Big 5 reserves, featuring exhilarating game drives and guided nature walks in search of lion, black and white rhino, buffalo, and elephant, among other classic African species. This is the ideal way to conclude your visit of South Africa's southern coast.

Day 16: Farewell to the Cape

After breakfast, you return your car at nearby Port Elizabeth Airport and begin your journey home. You may want to extend your tour and return to Cape Town along the scenic Route 62, which takes you inland to a land of olives, ostriches and wine farms.
